Cognitive Electronics is pleased to announce that it has received a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The SBIR program is a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization. The grant provides $1M over two years and will be used along with private financing to develop the Cognitive Electronics co-processor.

The awarding of the Phase II grant follows Cognitive’s successful execution of work funded by an SBIR Phase I grant in 2011.

“The awarding of the SBIR Phase II grant is validation of the potential of the Cognitive Electronics architecture designed by Andrew (Felch) as well as the successful execution of the SBIR Phase I work by Andrew and Glenn (Weinberg) last year,” said Mac Dougherty, CEO, Cognitive Electronics. “Along with our recently closed series A round of private equity financing, the SBIR Phase II grant will enable us to complete the design of the Cognitive Electronics co-processor in preparation for commercial production,” added Glenn Weinberg, Vice President, Product, Cognitive Electronics.

Cognitive Electronics is pleased to announce that its first patent has been issued by the United States Patent and Trademark office. Patent number 8,200,992 was issued on June 12, 2012 in the United States, and is pending in other countries. This patent covers the core technology of the Cognitive Electronics co-processor, including the chip and memory architecture that distinguish the Cognitive Electronics co-processor from traditional CPUs. “The issuance of our first patent is recognition of the revolutionary nature of the Cognitive Electronics co-processor and the tremendous work done by Andrew (Felch) and Rick (Granger) in developing a co-processor architecture capable of processing complex algorithms more power-efficiently than any existing processor on the market,” said Mac Dougherty, CEO, Cognitive Electronics. “The Cognitive Electronics co-processor architecture is a direct result of Andrew and Rick’s research into the algorithms used by the human brain for abilities such as object recognition that we as humans take for granted but which have traditionally been very difficult for computers to perform efficiently.”

In addition to this patent covering the fundamental operation of the Cognitive Electronics co-processor, Cognitive Electronics has a number of additional patents pending in the U.S. and abroad, covering various aspects of high-performance power-efficient computing hardware and software. Even at this early stage of its existence, Cognitive Electronics is continuing research into future areas of patentable technology and expects to build a robust patent portfolio in the coming years, while developing and releasing the first commercial implementation of the Cognitive Electronics co-processor.
